Hundredth Monkey Gallery, 324 N. Broadway, Truth or Consequences
Olin’s work is an important part of the contemporary arts community here in New Mexico and has been represented across the state in multiple forms including beadwork, metal work, drawing and painting.
Still turning the heads of art appreciators in his gallery in Truth or Consequences, his current works (The Presently Now Series) conjure reality, surreality, and metaphysics using familiar shapes and colors in abstract form. Sometimes appearing like a maddening dream, these carefully constructed paintings invite the viewer to share in his intricately philosophical world.
Many are already familiar with his Tabbed Series; oil paintings which are rather like optical illusions built from repetitious “tabs” of color. The fluctuations in color are sometimes so subtle that it takes a while to get your bearings; drawing you further into a three dimensional space and sending the mind on a journey. Others take on more contrasting form and color spinning an even deeper story.
After studying design at a Junior College in Wyoming (his home state), Olin began painting landscapes and moved to Santa Fe. There he found a rich arts community and discovered other art forms; particularly wearable art of maliciously constructed pictorial beadwork and later jewelry design, leather work, and metal raising which he studied in ’87 and continued to design and manufacture at James Reid Ltd in Santa Fe for a total of 12 years.
In the mid ’90s Olin bought a home in Truth or Consequences, NM where he apprenticed under acclaimed artist Joe Waldrum and rented his own studio near Elephant Butte Lake. Finally in ’04 he converted an old electronics repair shop into Mud Mountain Studios where he continued to work and exhibit for almost 11 years.
Readying himself for new era and celebrating many successful years at Mud Mountain (A.K.A. Hundredth Monkey Gallery), Olin will display a retrospective of his work spanning from 2006 to the present. The show will open August 9th for Art Hop (6-9 pm) and will be open to the public throughout the month.
Gallery hours are Tues, Thurs, Fri, and Sat 10am to 3pm and is located at 324 Broadway in T or C, NM. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience the collective works of such an integral part of T or C’s colorful arts community.
